A Heart of Prayer
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”
Hebrews 10:19-22
In this passage today, notice that the writer of Hebrews was addressing the Jews who still thought that only the High Priest could approach God and the Ark of the Covenant, which represented God. This concept of the common man approaching God was a revolutionary concept.
Before Christ died for our sins, only the High Priest was allowed to come before the Ark of the Covenant and ask forgiveness for the sins of the people. Once Christ died, he bridged the gap between God and man. He created a way for man to commune directly with God.
God says we can enter boldly into prayer with God by the blood of Jesus. First John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” If we are Christians, then we can fellowship with God anytime we want! Isn’t that comforting? We don’t have to go to a specific place to get God’s attention; He’s always with us!
Colossians 1:20 puts it this way, “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” We can approach God on the merit of Christ’s perfect sacrifice. He made a way for us to be able to enjoy the presence of God.
The story is told of a family who took their young son to visit their grandmother one summer day. That night, while having family prayer, the little boy stood up to pray. “Dear Lord,” he said, “please bless Mommy and Daddy and Grandma and all my friends. And Lord,” he began to shout, “I really would like a new bike!” “God isn’t deaf,” his parents told him. “I know,” he replied, “but Grandma’s in the next room.”
Friend, we need to realize that God is always available to talk to us. Our friends may fail us, our family may hurt us, or our coworkers may disappoint us, but God will always be ready to help us in time of need. We can approach his throne boldly because of Jesus Christ’s shed blood. Isn’t that an amazing fact?
The Almighty Creator of the universe invites you to talk to Him any time. If the President of the United States told you that you were welcome at the White House whenever you wanted to talk to him, wouldn’t you feel honored? Even more so, God Himself not only invites you to talk to Him anytime, He wants you to talk to Him! He loves you enough to have died on the Cross to create a way for you to talk to Him, so why not seize that opportunity and make talking to Him a part of your everyday life. Don’t take this wonderful opportunity for granted. Talk to God today, right now.
