The Value of God’s Word
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
1 Peter 1:23-25
What a great comfort it is to know that God and His Word will never let us down! His Word will never change. It is the manifestation of God to man. God took time from His busy schedule of conducting the affairs of the world to write a book for us to read! We don’t need to go buy a self-help book when we have a problem come up in our life. We just need to go to the Bible because God provides all of life’s answers for us.
Second Peter 1:21 says, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” This is not the changing word of man. If it were the word of man, then we might as well forget going to church or living for God. We might as well go fishing on Sunday mornings. However, it came not by the will of men, as Peter says, but by the very breath of God.
Second Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” That word inspiration is the Greek word theopneustos which means it is “God-breathed.” Just as a flutist would breathe into the flute to make a beautiful sound, so God breathed into these men the beautiful message that we have today. We have the precious Word of God.
As Psalm 119:89 says, “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” Not only is God’s Word precious, but it is also preserved. Winston Churchill said, “Must everything be reduced to pablum in this day in which we live.” It’s not hard to understand the Bible. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” We want everything to be instant in this day, but when it comes to really knowing the deep concepts of God, it may take time of studying and meditating.
I’m glad that I can stand up and preach, knowing that the Bible is God’s Holy Word preserved for us today. Revelation 22:18-19 says,” For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Our generation needs every word of the Bible! God’s Word is the revelation of Himself; he does not change, therefore His Word does not change.
Friend, aren’t you glad that God’s Word and His promises never change? They are just as applicable today as they were a thousand years ago! God’s Word is truly valuable to us. It has answers for any decision that we have to make, any problem that we are having, or any situation with which we need help. Don’t take the Holy Scriptures for granted! Study it! You will find that God will always come through with what He promises, so why not claim those promises in your life today!
