What’s Your Purpose?
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
Ephesians 4:17-24
Have you ever asked a young person what they were going to do and they gave you the classic “whatever” answer? Most kids in today’s society go places just to “hang out.” While there is nothing wrong with fellowshipping with friends, most Christians act in much the same way—like they have no purpose for living.
Most Christians are content with living their Christian life without sacrificing anything. They don’t want to get up early to read their Bible; they don’t wish to spend the extra time away from the television in prayer; nor do they wish to let others know of salvation. If you find yourself in this category, then I have a question for you: What’s your purpose for living? Why didn’t God just take you to Heaven after you were saved?
God had a purpose in leaving you on earth after you were saved and that purpose is called His will for your life. He has a plan that involves you specifically! Do you know that plan? Are you seeking His purpose for your life? Are you doing His will?
I would challenge you to take time within the next few days and sit down with God. Seek His will for you life. If He has already shown it to you then ask Him if you are carrying out His will to its full potential. Recommit to fulfilling His purpose in your life.
Write out a purpose statement for your life. It could go something like this: “My purpose while here on earth is to follow Christ by walking a renewed and holy walk in a wicked and ungodly world.” Put that statement in a noticeable area of your house so you can see it everyday. When you see it, pray that God would give you strength and courage to fulfill His will in this present world.
Seek His guidance as you live each day. Only when you face every day with the attitude of expecting God to use you greatly can you hope to fulfill God’s will. Let Him use you and remain sensitive to His leading throughout the day. It was once said, “He who aims at nothing hits it every time.” What are you aiming at today? What is your purpose for living?
