Is It Really That Important?
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
Ephesians 5:15-16
Have you ever witnessed to someone and asked them if they wanted to be saved but they seemed apathetic to God’s truth? Maybe you’ve heard the reply, “That’s good and I believe it, but I’ll make that decision later.” The truth is that many people in our world do not believe that God is coming soon so they put off getting saved until it is “convenient” for them.
As Christians, we see the error in that thinking, but have you ever stopped to consider that we think the same way sometimes. We are saved, but we sometimes don’t serve God as we should. Have you considered serving in a ministry but decided to wait until later? Have you been convicted by God to give more in the offering but decided you would do it later when you were better off financially? Why is it important that we serve God now?
As we see in the first part of verse sixteen, we need to redeem the time because the days are evil. The world we live in is increasingly getting more evil. Our opportunities for serving God are numbered! We don’t have that much time left on this earth! We need to be serving Him every chance we get!
We should also serve Him because the reward is great. First John 2:17 says, “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” Only the things that we do for Christ will last through eternity! Don’t be left at the throne of God with nothing to give back to Him!
Finally, we should serve Christ because not doing so is disobedience to Him. First Peter 4:2 says, “That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.” Our overwhelming desire in decision-making should be to seek the will of God. Everything that we do should be characterized by fulfilling God’s will for our lives. God wants each of us to serve Him no matter what our “talents” are. God doesn’t care if you are in the spotlight or behind the scenes; He wants you to serve Him in the area He has gifted you!
Have you been serving Christ? Is it really that important? Yes! Because time is limited, the reward is great, and the only other option is disobedience to God! Friend, we wouldn’t dare think of putting off salvation! Why put off serving Christ today?
