November: A Time to Give Thanks
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer unto the
LORD. If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried. Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings. And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave offering unto the LORD, and it shall be the priest’s that sprinkleth the blood of the peace offerings. And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall not leave any of it until the morning.”
Leviticus 7:11-15
Have you ever noticed that kids ask for a lot of things? I remember when my wife Terrie went on a ladies’ retreat one year and I took my four children to the grocery store. They were fascinated by all the candy and wanted to try each one! I bought them each a piece of candy, and we headed home. On the way home, as each child was enjoying their candy, I heard my youngest son Matthew say, “Thanks for the candy, Dad!” I almost crashed the car right there! I was in shock that one of our children had actually said thank you!
You know, most people today would have a heart attack if someone said thank you to them. Sadly, it is not common in our society to hear the words “thank you.” People love to take without giving thanks for what has been done. Yet, God wants us to have a thankful attitude. In Philippians 4:6 God says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” God wants us to be thankful in everything we do!
He also says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Being thankful should be a natural part of our lives as Christians! It should be as natural as reading your Bible or praying! Yet, many times we hurry on with life without taking time to thank those around us.
Have you ever thought about all that Christ has done for you? Take some time right now and list what He has given you. Maybe a car, a home, a family, a good church, salvation, health, life, food, clothing, a job, and the list could go on! As we enter November, our thoughts should be on thanking the Lord for all He has done for us!
Not only should we thank God, but we need to also thank those around us! Think about the person who helped you get saved. What if they hadn’t been there that day? Where would you be? Thank them! What about your friends? It would be pretty lonely to go through life without any friends! Thank them! I want to challenge you to take time each week this month to write at least three thank you notes to people in your life. It could be your pastor, a teacher, a boss, a friend, a coworker, or anyone who has helped you in some way.
Also, take time to write God a thank you note. Reflect on all He did for you in sending His Son to die on Calvary. Thank Him for daily providing for you. He wants you to thank Him! This month, remember that Thanksgiving shouldn’t be the only day you thank God for what He has done! Make this November a time of giving thanks.
