Our Devotion

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.”

Genesis 19:15-16

In our passage today, we read the story of Abraham’s nephew Lot. Even though Lot had grown up with the influence of a godly man such as Abraham, he chose to do wrong when he was given the chance to go his own way. He eventually found himself in the wicked city of Sodom.

Not only was he living there, but he had become one of the city’s leaders. When the angels of the Lord came to speak to him, they found him sitting outside the city’s gates—a sign of political position in the city. He had become so devoted to the city and so involved in its affairs that the people respected him.

He was one of the leaders in a wicked city that wanted nothing to do with God. When the angels came to Lot, the men of the city sought to commit wicked acts against these angels. But Lot did not rebuke them! He condoned their wickedness!

In verses seven of this chapter we see, “And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.” Notice that he calls them brethren. He is linking himself with them! He acknowledges that he is part of their culture.

Just as Lot fell spiritually because he devoted himself to Sodom and to its wicked ways, what we devote ourselves to will determine our spiritual effectiveness. When we devote our lives to loving God and becoming more like Him, we will be more effective witnesses for Christ in this world. Psalm 40:8 says, “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.” When we are right with God, it will delight our hearts to do His will for us.

Do you find yourself devoted to the cause of Christ—to furthering His work? Are you devoted to telling others of Christ’s gift of salvation? When we are in God’s will and are devoted to Him, He will give us peace and joy in our lives!

We must be careful to remain devoted to Christ as we go throughout the day. We can often become distracted and caught up in the fast pace of the day that we lose focus on what truly matters. Is there something in your life that you are devoted to that is taking the place of God? Ask God to help you stay committed and devoted to His will for your life today.
