The Pursuit of the Seeker

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon."

Isaiah 55:6-7

Yesterday, we saw that when we seek the Lord, He will fill our lives with joy. Many people seek for joy in the pleasures and cares of this world, yet true joy can only be found in Christ. This world has nothing to offer us that will bring us joy, yet as we seek Christ, He will give us joy.

In seeking Christ we must seek Him from our hearts. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." When we open our hearts to God and seek Him through prayer, we will find Him. We must clear our hearts of any sin or wickedness and come before God with a pure heart that is ready to hear from Him.

Deuteronomy 4:29 says, "But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul." God desires to have your whole heart. It is a tragedy that many Christians simply wish to add time with Christ to their "checklist" of things to do each day. But God wants us to forget the cares of this world, come to Him with an open heart, and seek Him.

Someone once said, "One person with passion is greater than ninety-nine with interest." If we do not seek God with a passion to truly know Him, we will not develop into the Christians God wants us to be. As we seek Him from pure hearts that desire to know Him, He will bring us into a closer walk with Him, and He will be able to use us in a greater way.

Not only should we seek God with our whole hearts, but we must also seek Him through His Word. John 1:1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." We must seek God in His Word.

During World War II, the enemy conducted experiments to find the most effective way to get POW's to talk—they found that it was through solitary confinement. After a few days of solitary confinement, the prisoners would give information to the enemy much easier.

Just as the soldiers became weak without communication with others, we can become weak without communication and fellowship with our Heavenly Father. God doesn't intend for you to live in spiritual "solitary confinement." He desires to spend time with you each day! When we don't seek Christ each day and spend time with Him, we are more susceptible to the enemy. We must daily seek Christ by spending time with Him in His Word!

Are you seeking Christ with your whole heart? Are you spending time in His Word each day? It has been said that the tragedy of the hour is that the situation is desperate, but the saints are not. We must seek Christ each day with a passion to know Him! Take time to seek Christ today. Open your heart to Him and seek Him through His Word.
