Spending Time with Christ by Dr. Paul Chappell "Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42 On the occasion of Mothers' Day, it is important to remember that God honors women in His Word. The most beautiful stories ever written about women are found in the Bible. Jochebed, the mother of Moses, trusted God to take care of Moses as she placed him in the basket and sent him down the river. Hannah poured her heart out before God, asking Him for a son. And the Bible says that Mary the mother of Jesus was blessed among women. The most joyful women are those who walk with God in the truth of His Word. In our text today we see Jesus entering the village of Bethany, the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, friends of Christ. As they heard of Christ's soon arrival, Martha immediately began preparing her house. As we see in verse 40, Martha was "cumbered" about with serving. She was flustered and probably "stressed out." She was so busy with serving Christ and preparing things that she failed to spend time with Him. Sometimes the stress of schedules and "to-do lists" can affect us spiritually. Many times spending time with Christ can get drowned out by work, caring for the children, and other things. But just as with Martha, Christ wants to fellowship with us. Sometimes Christians can be so busy with serving Christ that they fail to stop and spend time with Him. Philippians 4:6 says, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." Christ doesn't want us to be so busy about things in life that we neglect to spend time with Him! We must come to Him and let Him give us strength for each day. God shows us an example of a woman who was so busy about serving Christ that she neglected to fellowship with Him. Sometimes this can be true of us as Christians. Are you taking time to fellowship with Christ each day? Don't let your service for Him replace your relationship with Him. Ask Christ to help you seek Him first each day.
