God's Word

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."

2 Timothy 3:15-17

The famous preacher Gipsy Smith once told the story of a man who said he had received no inspiration from the Bible although he had "gone through it several times." "Let it go through you once," replied Smith, "then you will tell a different story!" God's Word has the power to change our lives if we will let it. This power comes because the Bible comes from God—it is His Word to us.

The Bible is God's perfect Word. It was written by many different men of God as the Holy Spirit filled them and directed them in what to write. Second Peter 1:21 says, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." God chose these men to pen His perfect Word.

Over three thousand times in the New Testament, the Bible is referred to as "the word of God," "God's Word," "the words of the Lord," etc. Luke 5:1 says, "And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret." Because the Bible is inspired by God, we know that it is perfect.

Not only is the Bible God's perfect Word, it is also God's personal letter to us. During Old Testament times, God often appeared to people and spoke to them audibly. Although God does not physically appear to us anymore, we can still speak to Him and gain His power through His Word. We do not have to be at church or in any specific place to hear from God. We can go to His Word and read His promises to us! God wrote the Bible to each one of us, and He wants us to read it!

The Bible is our way of hearing from God and fellowshipping with Him. Yet, we cannot meet with God and learn from Him if we are not in His Word each day. We must read His Word with an open heart, ready to hear from Him.

George Washington once said, "It is impossible to righteously govern the world without God and the Bible." Our nation's Founding Fathers knew the necessity of founding our nation on the Bible. Even as they founded our nation on God's Word, we must found our lives on God's Word. His Word is His personal letter to us and we must spend time reading it each day.

Are you reading God's Word each day and fellowshipping with Him? God has preserved His Word for you and me! In it we can find promises and gain strength to live for Him each day. Spend time today reading God's Word and let God speak to you through it.
