God's Powerful Word

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

Romans 1:16

Yesterday, we saw that God's Word is perfect because God inspired it! God used holy men as they were filled with the Holy Spirit to pen the words of the Bible. The Bible is God's letter to us, and it is not only perfect, but it is also powerful.

God's Word is powerful to show us our need of salvation. God offers salvation to all who believe in Him and trust His Son's work on Calvary. God's Word is powerful enough to convict someone of their sin and show them the Gospel. Second Timothy 3:15 says, "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." Paul is reminding Timothy that he had known the Scriptures from a young age, and they showed him the way of salvation.

Not only does the Word of God have the power to show the lost the way of salvation, but it also has the power to convict us of sin in our lives. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Whenever we read the Word of God, it will show us any sin we have in our lives, and it will cause us to want to repent.

We should not get upset when we are convicted, but we should welcome conviction. Many times we can look at conviction as a time of rebuke and punishment, but we should look at it as an opportunity to grow closer to God! God convicts those He loves! It is a privilege for us that God would care enough about us to show us when we have strayed and to compel us to come back to Him! Thank God for the power His Word has to show us the sin in our lives!

God's Word also has the power to protect us. Psalm 119:11-12 says, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes." When we read God's Word and hide it in our hearts, we will have an answer for the devil when he attacks us. D.L. Moody once said, "A Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who is not." When we spend time each day in His Word, we will be able to combat the devil effectively. The Word of God has the power to protect us against Satan's attacks.

God's Word is powerful indeed. It has the power to show the lost their need of salvation, convict us when we sin, and protect us against the devil's attacks. Even though God's Word has this power, it is no use to us if we are not spending time reading it each day. When we read His Word, we must open our hearts to God and ask Him to show us any sin in our lives. We must also spend time hiding His Word in our hearts so we may be prepared to face the devil's attacks.

Are you opening up your heart to God as you read His Word each day? Don't let reading God's Word become so routine to you that you fail to open your heart to God. Let Him show you any sin in your life. Also, spend time hiding His Word in your heart. Let God give you power as you read His Word today.
