The Promise of His Coming

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee."

Titus 2:13-15

In the early church there was great anticipation for the Lord's return. This was an especially anticipated event when the church faced much persecution in the early days of that apostolic period. Every writer of the New Testament gave some information about the Lord's return and the hope it brought to those in suffering and persecution. Many had lost loved ones and friends dear to them, so the hope of seeing them again one day was also comforting.

In our verses today we see that Christ promises to return and take His children to Heaven. As believers, we have hope that one day Christ will end our stay on this earth and take us to our final home of Heaven.

Christ promises us that His return is certain. He tells us in John 14:2-3, "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." Christ promises that His return is sure, otherwise He would have told us! We can trust that Christ is one day coming again.

We can know that Christ's return is not only certain, but it is also going to be sudden. Philippians 3:20 says, "For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ." Christ commands us to look for His coming. We do not know the time of His return, yet because He tells us in Scripture, we know that it is soon.

Dr. G. Campbell Morgan, the distinguished British clergyman, said, "I never begin my work in the morning without thinking that perhaps He may interrupt my work and begin His own. I am not looking for death, I am looking for Him."

Because we know that Christ is returning and that it is soon, we should be prepared. He commands us to be looking for His return. That means we should be ready for Him to come back at any moment. Our lives should be spotless and we should be busy about God's work so that if He were to come back, we would be ready.

Christ's promise to return offers hope to us as believers, yet we must make sure we are ready to meet Him. Christ could come at any moment! Are you ready to meet the Lord? Are you faithfully serving Him with a pure heart? Spend time with the Lord right now and make sure you are ready should He come back today.
