Grateful for His Blessings

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

1 Thessalonians 5:18

As we saw yesterday, when we focus on ourselves, we lose the opportunity for God to use us. He cannot use us when we are filled with bitterness and anger. We must take our eyes off our hurts and look to Christ. One way we can keep our focus on Christ is by thanking Him for His many blessings.

One blessing we can be thankful for is Christ's provision. Philippians 4:14 says, "Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction." Paul is thanking the church at Philippi for providing for his needs through their gifts. Paul realized the importance of being grateful for the provisions of others.

It has been said that to be upset over what you don't have, is to waste what you do have. God has given each of us exactly what we need to accomplish His will for our lives. He has provided for us, according to our needs, and has given us far more than we deserve! When we realize how much God has blessed us and given us, we will soon forget our own hurt.

Not only should we be grateful for His provision, but we should also be grateful for His omniscience. Romans 12:19 says, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." God promises us that He is in control of everything that goes on. He knows when others wrong us, and He wants us to let go of that hurt and let Him have control.

We should be grateful that God is omniscient, and that we do not have to keep track of everything that goes on in the world! When we realize that God is over all, and that He knows what goes on; we can know that He will take care of everything and work everything out according to His plan.

Last, we should be grateful for our salvation. No matter what happens to us in this life, we can give thanks that we will one day live with Christ in Heaven for eternity! There will be no more hurt or heartache, and we will all worship God forever. What a great promise! When we realize that we are going to one day live with Him, we can forget the cares of this life and set our eyes on Christ.

Have you thanked God today for His many blessings in your life? When we take our eyes off ourselves and focus on the goodness of God, we will not develop bitter spirits toward those around us. Take time to thank God today for all He has done for you.
