Fellowship with Christ

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ."

1 John 1:1-3

When we accept Christ as our Saviour, we immediately join the family of God. God promises those in His family many privileges. One privilege we have is the ability to fellowship with Him each day.

The book of 1 John was written by the Apostle John who was called "the beloved apostle." John was the one seated next to Christ at the Last Supper and he also referred to himself as "the apostle whom Christ loved." While Christ was on earth, John had a special relationship with Christ. John spent time with Christ and fellowshipped with Him.

Although we cannot physically spend time with Christ like John, we can fellowship with Him every day through His Word and through prayer. The word fellowship in the Bible means "to have in common." When we are saved, we join God's family and have something in common with Him! We can fellowship with Him through His Son each day.

Many people experience times of loneliness, but as Christians we should never feel lonely! Christ is always with us and we can fellowship with Him at any time. Christ promised us in Hebrews 13:5, "…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." No matter where we are or what we are doing, Christ is there beside us. We can fellowship with Him whenever we want.

A little boy was eagerly looking forward to the birthday party of a friend who lived only a few blocks away. When the day finally arrived, a blizzard made the sidewalks and roads nearly impassable. The lad's father, sensing the danger, hesitated to let his son go. The youngster reacted tearfully. "But Dad," he pleaded, "all the other kids will be there. Their parents are letting them go." The father thought for a moment, then replied softly, "All right, you may go." Surprised but overjoyed, the boy bundled up and plunged into the raging storm. The driving snow made visibility almost impossible, and it took him more than half an hour to trudge the short distance to the party. As he rang the doorbell, he turned briefly to look out into the storm. His eye caught the shadow of a retreating figure. It was his father. He had followed his son's every step to make sure he arrived safely.

Even when we feel like we're alone, Christ is right beside us. He desires to fellowship with us. Are you fellowshipping with Christ each day? He longs to fellowship with you through prayer and Bible reading. Seek His face today and develop a close relationship with Him by spending time with Him today.
