The Product of Fellowship

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full."

1 John 1:3-4

As we fellowship with Christ, we will draw closer to Him and our love for Him will grow. Not only will we grow closer to Christ but we will also receive joy in our hearts. The product of spending time with Christ in His Word and drawing close to Him will be peace and joy in our lives.

Joy is a byproduct of fellowship with Christ. Many times the Christians who always seem happy and joyful are those who have spent time with Christ. When we spend time with Christ, we are reminded of His blessings and goodness to us. Anytime we think of all that Christ has done for us, we will be joyful!

When we fellowship with Christ through His Word, we will often be reminded of the salvation He offers us. As we think of our salvation, we can have joy. Psalm 16:11 says, "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." There is joy in knowing that no matter what, we have a home in Heaven. Even during the saddest of times, when we think of Christ's sacrifice on Calvary and His provision of a way to Heaven, we can have joy!

Not only is there joy in thinking of our salvation as we fellowship with Him, but there is also joy in reading God's Word. Psalm 119:97 says, "O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day." As we read God's Word and meditate on it, we can have joy! His Word shows us His love for us and His promises to us. Psalm 119:167 says, "My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly." We can have joy as we fellowship with Christ through His Word.

George Muller once said, "It is a common temptation of Satan to make us give up the reading of the Word and prayer when our enjoyment is gone…."  Satan will tempt us to neglect God's Word when we are experiencing trials or difficulties. Yet, it is through God's Word that we find help and joy during these trials! As we spend time in His Word, He will give us joy in our lives.

Do you have joy in your life today? Are you living a joyful Christian life? True joy comes as we daily spend time with Christ through His Word and through remembering all He has done for us. Take time now to fellowship with Christ. Spend time in His Word and thank Him for His gift of salvation. Ask Him to give you joy as you live for Him today.
