Direction in Life

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly."

Genesis 13:10-13

All of us have been amazed at the hurricane season of Florida in the past few years. Hurricane Charley hit as a Category 4 storm on the Safford-Simpson scale with winds of 145 mph. Frances hit as a Category 2 with winds of 105 mph, and Ivan hit as a strong Category 3 with winds of 130 mph. I couldn't help but think of a family years ago who moved from here in Lancaster to Florida to get away from the wind!

One of the greatest concerns with a hurricane is the direction of a hurricane. Millions of dollars are spent trying to determine the direction they will take. Direction is also important when we consider someone's spiritual life!

In Genesis 12, God called Abraham from the country he was in to a promised land. It is here where we first begin to hear about Lot, the nephew of Abraham who traveled with him to Canaan.

Throughout Lot's life, he had made wrong decisions even though he had a godly uncle praying for him. On one occasion, he was abducted by a group of desert chiefs and Abraham rescued him. Yet even then he would not return to the will of God. Lot had set his direction in life.

As we see in our verses today, Lot followed his heart in making decisions instead of following God. He chose to separate himself from the man of God and follow the world's pleasures. This choice set not only his physical direction, but his spiritual direction as well.

Before he made such an important decision, Lot should have sought spiritual counsel from God's Word and from Abraham, his godly uncle. Sometimes we may think we know the answers and we may try to figure things out on our own, but we must seek direction from God first.

There are no small decisions in God's eyes! He desires for us to come to Him and seek His counsel in everything we do! He knows our futures and He desires to bless us, but we must first seek His guidance and direction for our lives. We must come to God and seek His direction in every decision we make, for He alone has the answers.

Do you seek God's guidance and direction in every decision you make? Whether it's what job to take, what home to buy, or even what friends to have, we must seek God's direction. Take time now to seek God's guidance in your life. Ask Him for help in making decisions in your life. As you seek Him for direction, He will guide and bless your life.
