Looking Only to God

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt."

Exodus 32:1-4

Each of us have had times in our lives when we had to decide whose side we were on. Whether it's deciding a sports team or a political candidate, we have all had to decide who we would trust and partner with. In our verses today, we see the children of Israel at a crossroads having to decide who they would worship.

Israel had been delivered from the bondage of Egypt. They had seen the great miracle of the crossing of the Red Sea, and they had arrived at Mount Horeb (Sinai). Moses had made one trip up the mount and had returned with the Ten Commandments. Upon his return to the mount, he told the people to sanctify themselves and receive the rest of God's commandments and instructions. The people agreed to keep themselves pure before the Lord until Moses returned.

When Moses was gone, many days passed with no word from him. The time had been almost forty days since he left, and the people started to get anxious. They did not know if Moses was even still alive! This led to a very sad event in the life of the Israelites.

Instead of trusting God during this time of waiting, they turned to Aaron and demanded immediate action. Aaron was Moses' brother and was well-respected throughout the camp. Aaron should have been a strong spiritual leader, but he caved in to the people's requests and sought to appease their demands. Instead of pointing the people back to God, he made an idol for them to worship.

Like Aaron and the Israelites, we can sometimes take our eyes off God during a time of waiting. While God desires for us to wait for a period of time, we can often become impatient and seek an answer on our own. It is during this time that God desires to work in our lives. We must keep our eyes on Him and stay faithful to God during this time of waiting.

Are you going through a time of waiting in your life? God desires to work in you, but you must look to Him and remain faithful. Spend time with God now and ask Him to help you look only to Him as you patiently wait for His will in your life.
