Praying in Faith

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

Hebrews 11:1-3

Robert E. Lee once said, "Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray—to really pray. Let there be prayer at sunup, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight—all through the day. Let us all pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for our churches. Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word 'concern' out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our nation. Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ and redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice."

Prayer is our way of talking with God. It is our way of fellowshipping with Him, giving Him our problems, seeking Him for help, and laying our requests before Him. God desires to help meet our needs, but we must come to Him in prayer.

It is not only important that we take our requests before God, but that we ask Him with faith. Faith is our way of showing God that we believe He is able to answer our requests. Jesus told the blind man in Matthew 9:29, "…According to your faith be it unto you." God answered this man's pleas because he had faith that God would heal Him.

In Hebrews 11:1, faith is described as "the substance of things hoped for." The word substance in that verse refers to "solid ground or confidence." God desires that we would place our confidence in Him and make Him our solid ground. As we bring our requests before God, we must place our confidence and faith in Him that He will answer our prayers according to His will.

In that same verse, faith is also described as "the evidence of things not seen." The word evidence means "convincing proof." God has given us convincing proof that is able to answer our requests! He created the world, made man, provided salvation, and has given us all we have! He has given us convincing proof that He is both willing and able to answer our requests. We must simply take them to Him in faith, believing He will answer them!

At times, we can be guilty of not trusting that God will answer our prayers. Have you ever given something to God, then kept thinking it over to try to find a solution? God has a will for our lives and He knows the needs that arise in our lives. We must take our needs to Him in faith and trust that He will answer them! He has given us convincing proof that He is able to answer our prayers! We must place our confidence in Him. Spend time with God right now and give Him your requests. Leave them in His hands and have faith that He will answer them according to His will.
