Faith is the Victory
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”
1 John 5:4-5
It has often been said that a man’s attitude will determine his actions, and a man’s outlook will determine his outcome. There is no question that the outlook of most Americans today is gloomy. One US News report gave the following statistics: “Fifty-seven percent of people believe religion is losing its influence, and sixty-seven percent say America’s enemy is stagnation.” Most of their feelings are valid and are created by a negative outlook that permeates our society and media today.
As we consider the problems in our nation and around the world , my question to you is “Where does your outlook come from—the media or the Bible?” First John 5:4 states, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” Romans 8:35, 37 tell us, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?...Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Today, more than ever, God’s people need an outlook of faith in Jesus Christ. Bad things are going to continue to happen in our society that are out of our control, but as Christians, we can turn to our faith in God and His Word. Second Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Sometimes it is hard to stay focused on that which we can’t see, especially when terrible things are happening all around us. We must by faith turn our outlook upward—God-ward. Only God can give us the hope and the grace to continue during difficult times.
My friend, are you struggling with a negative outlook on life? Are you wearied by the constant problems plaguing our society? Do you feel as though you are living without the hope of better things in the future?
Turn your eyes upon Jesus today. Look upward. Remember that “we are more than conquerors through him that loved us,” and that faith is the victory, which will overcome the trials and heartaches of this world.
