What Is That to Thee?

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?follow thou me.”

John 21:20-22

As we approach the Scriptures today, we see Peter asking Jesus what would happen to another apostle. Peter had just discovered that he would be martyred for Christ, and he was curious as to what tremendous price John would have to pay, since he was the disciple most beloved. Jesus says in verse 22, “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.” Jesus wasn’t saying what John was doing. He simply let Peter know that it didn’t matter what John was going to be doing in his future. All that mattered was that Peter followed Christ.

One of the most potentially harmful things in the heart of a Christian is their concern over what other people are doing or saying. Too often, the status quo of our spiritual service to Christ becomes what everyone else is doing, instead of what God says is right.

Just as what John would be doing in the future held no power over what Peter should do, what other Christians are doing or are planning to do should hold no sway in the decisions of our daily lives. Our job is to follow Christ; it is His job to make sure everyone else is doing the same.

Do you find yourself taking your eyes off the prize and concentrating on what others think, say, or do? Remember, Christ wants you to follow Him no matter what other people do or say. “…What is that to thee? follow thou me.”
