The Pure in Heart

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

Matthew 5:8

As we look at this passage of Scripture, let’s notice the last part of the verse, “…for they shall see God.” When thinking about the idea of having a pure heart, some people often wonder what the benefit of having a pure heart is. This verse is saying that the benefit is that you will be able to see God. We know that we cannot see God literally, but we will be able to see Him in several different ways.

First of all, we will be able to see God in creation. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” Have you ever been watching the sun set and truly realized that it is God who made it so beautiful? He made it so that we could enjoy it and could give Him praise for it! A person with a pure heart can see nature for what it really is: God’s masterpiece showing us His power.

We can also see God in our circumstances. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”  When you’re right with God, even during difficult circumstances, you can see Him. A person with a pure heart will realize that God has a purpose for everything and they will be able to thank Him for those circumstances.

Lastly, we can see God in the Bible. John 5:39 says, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”  Reading your Bible shouldn’t be a chore or a task for you. A person with a pure heart wants to read the Bible because he truly wants to meet with God. It is through God’s Word that answers can be found to life’s difficult situations.

We see in James 4:8, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” If we want to have a pure heart and to see God, we must “draw nigh” to Him. He wants us to come to Him and to learn to be more like Him through studying His Word. When we feel distant from God, it is not because He has moved, but because we have moved further away from Him. We must come back to Him to become more like Him. What we need to focus on more than the exterior, is making sure that our hearts are ready for God to use us.

The highest joy of man comes when we cultivate the deepest part of man: there’s no higher joy in life than having a heart right with God. When the heart is pure, the vision is clear. Life would be so much easier if we could all see what lies ahead! That is not God’s plan though. He wants us to trust Him for our every need. Only with a pure heart can we come to the place of completely trusting in God to guide our steps.

Friend, I would encourage you to take a few minutes right now to tell God that you want a heart that is right with Him. Ask Him to give you a pure heart and to help you see Him. Do you want to see what you can do with your life, or do you want to see what God can do with your life?
