Complementing Each Other

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”

Genesis 2:20-22

As we look at the creation of a woman in Scripture, note the last part of verse 20, “…but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.” God had created everything in the Garden of Eden and had found that it was good, but Adam was alone. God did not intend for Adam to be lonely so He caused a deep sleep to come on Adam. He then took one of Adam’s ribs and created a woman from his rib. God then awakened Adam and brought the woman unto him.

Let’s notice that God created woman from Adam’s side. He did not create her from Adam’s foot, nor his head, but from his side. This is significant because it shows that the woman was to work alongside Adam to help him.

The word helpmeet in verse 20 implies “a reflected image or a counterpart.” God did not create the woman exactly like Adam, but he made her in such a way that she could help him. Many couples today live their life trying to mold the other one to become just like they are. God did not create your spouse to be just like you but to complement you. Instead of trying to conform to each other, you need to conform to Christ. When you begin conforming to God and His Word, things will start to work themselves out.

God brings people into our lives, whether they are our spouse or not, to help complete us. We don’t need to complain that they don’t do things the way we do or that they are a little different than we are. All we need to do is recognize that they aren’t exactly like us and trust God’s providence.

This reminds me of the two accounts of creation that I’ve heard over the years. The first one is the woman’s account and she says, “God created man, looked at him and said, ‘I can do better,’ and then made woman.” The next is the man’s, who says, “God made the world, beast, man and rested. God made the woman, and neither the world, the beast, nor man has rested since!”

My friend, is there someone in your life that you consider to be difficult? Do you complain because they don’t do things just like you? God is Omniscient and He knows what He’s doing! He placed them into your life for a purpose, and He doesn’t make mistakes! Ask the Lord to help you grow more into His likeness.
