The Brightest Light

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”

Acts 9:3-6

In today’s Scriptures, we see the Lord’s appearing to Saul who later became the Apostle Paul. As Paul was traveling down the road to Damascus, the Lord appeared to him and called him out to become one of His disciples. Saul, recognizing the Lord’s glory, fell to his knees and repented of his sins. This was the twelfth and final appearing of our resurrected Lord.

The Light that shone down from Heaven on Saul was the Lord Himself. John 8:12 says, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Christ is our Light! Whether to show an unsaved person His glory, or to point us in the right direction, He is the one who will light our path.

After the Light shone from Heaven, a voice spoke to Saul. The first thing that Jesus said to Saul was “Why persecutest thou me?”  In this one statement, Jesus identifies the Christians as His people. He shows that whenever Saul was persecuting the Christians, he was in fact, persecuting Christ.

The next thing Christ said to Saul was “It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Here, Christ is showing His power. Christ uses the illustration of how a farmer when he is tilling his fields and he pokes the oxen with a stick, the oxen kick back to try to get the pricking to stop. He was saying that even though Saul was trying to stop the Gospel by killing the Christians, God was still in control and there was nothing Saul could do about it.

Have you ever been without a light in a dark place? I remember hearing of a family who, after a recent hurricane knocked out the power in their home, had to stumble around to find things. The father went into the kitchen to get a bowl of dry cereal to eat. After he had eaten half of the bowl, he realized that he had grabbed the cat food.

Christian, even when you feel that you are in the darkest of times, Jesus is still in control. He is the Light of the World and wants to help you see where to go. He provides this light to help guide us when we lose our way. The way He provides His light for us is by His holy Word. In it are answers for any problem you may have.

Are you struggling to find the right path? Do you need help finding God’s will for your life? Grab a light! Not just any light, but the Light—Jesus Christ. Seek His will through reading His Word every day. Not only will you find answers to any problem you have, but you will also find great blessings and truths to claim. He wants to speak to you and to show you His love. Seek Him every day, and you will have no problems seeing which path to take.
