Why Are Ye So Fearful?
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
One summer night during a severe thunderstorm, a mother was tucking her small son into bed. She was about to turn the light off when he asked in a trembling voice, "Mommy, will you stay with me all night?" Smiling, the mother gave him a warm, reassuring hug and said tenderly, "I can't dear. I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence followed. At last it was broken by a shaky voice saying, "The big sissy!"
Sometimes it’s easy to be afraid, as the disciples learned in this passage. They were afraid of the storm that had overtaken them on the Sea of Galilee. In a final attempt to save their lives, they awakened Jesus and questioned why He was asleep. Jesus did not immediately correct them but simply commanded the sea to be still.
How many times have we questioned God in the middle of a storm? How many times have we lost faith and almost given up on Him? How often could God have corrected and rebuked us, but He merely calmed the storm? Aren’t you glad that we serve a loving God?
After Christ showed them that He had the power to calm the storm and that there was nothing to fear, He then asks them why they were afraid. Think about this. If you were on a ship with Christ and suddenly there came a storm that was about to take your life, would you be afraid? Of course we would all like to think that we would have the faith to trust God, but these men were with Him and didn’t even trust Him! This shows us how easy it is to lose faith in God.
The question is not will the storm come, but rather how will I handle the storm that comes into my life. Jesus doesn’t promise that we won’t have storms in our lives but He does promise that He will help us through them. God has a purpose for putting that trial in your life. He wants to use it to grow you spiritually and to increase your faith in Him.
Why wouldn’t you want to trust God to handle your problems? With one breath, He created the world. With dirt, He created man. With five loaves and two fishes, He fed thousands of people. With three nails, He took away all your sins. God has proved in so many ways that He can take care of you! All you have to do is trust Him and follow His plan for your life. Give Him that burden or problem and let Him have His way. Aren’t you glad that you don’t have to work things out? Christ will take care of you! Seek His help and His peace in your life today!
