Not My Will, But Thine
Revival Readings for the New Year
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5
We all have our own understanding that alters our perspective. The book of Proverbs clearly warns us not to lean on this understanding. Susannah Wesley was the mother of Charles and John Wesley. In her words, “Religion is nothing else than doing the will of God and not our own.” Our own understanding is what keeps us bound to our will instead of releasing to God’s.
Christ set this example for us in the garden of Gethsemane when He said in Luke 22:42, “…Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” When Christ said “nevertheless,” He was exchanging what He desired for what He knew God desired.
God desires each of us to become more like Him. Are you leaning on your own understanding or surrendering to God’s will? Surrender your will to God and let Him change you to become more like Him.
