Choosing to Surrender

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment."

Hebrews 11:23

Yesterday, we saw that when we put our lives into God's hands and live by faith, He will guide us and protect us. We can know that Christ will take care of us as we live by faith. Today we will see how God gave Moses' parents victory when they chose to surrender to Him.

When Moses was born, Pharaoh decreed that all male Jewish children were to be killed. Exodus 1:16 says, "And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live."

God's will for Moses was that he would one day lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Because Moses' parents were surrendered to God's will, they protected their son. They chose to follow God instead of Pharaoh.

A life of faith chooses to surrender to God. Moses' parents had faith that God would take care of them and Moses as they obeyed Him. They chose to surrender to God rather than the world. They chose to trust Him for their safety. As Moses' parents surrendered to God, He protected young Moses.

It has been said that there is no such thing as a correspondence course for swimming. If you want to swim, you must get into the pool. It takes courage to get into the unknown and learn. Even so, we cannot expect God to work in our lives if we are not stepping out by faith and trusting Him. We must surrender to God's will and trust Him. A faith that is never put to work will not be strong when it is tested. Moses' parents had surrendered their lives to God and had faith to trust Him when they hid Moses. They put their faith to work.

Not only does faith surrender to God, but faith also has confidence. The last part of our verse today says, "and they were not afraid of the king's commandment." Moses' parents were not afraid of Pharaoh. They had surrendered to Christ and had confidence that He would protect them.

True faith removes all fear. We have nothing to worry about when we place our faith and trust in Christ. Any worry or doubt that comes into our lives is the devil's attempt to get us to turn from God. We must not fear, but we must be confident that God will see us through.

As we seek to live by faith, we must choose to surrender to Christ. We must surrender our will and our plans to Him. We must put our lives in His hands. Moses' parents surrendered themselves to Christ and they exhibited that surrender in obedience to Him.

Are you surrendered to God? Are you living with complete trust and faith in Him? Don't let the devil bring fear and doubt into your life. Choose to surrender to God and trust Him completely as you live by faith today.
