Committed to Christ

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Matthew 11:28-30

I once heard a story of a pet store delivery truck going down the road. At every stoplight the driver would get out and hit the sides of the truck with a wooden board. Nobody could figure out what he was doing, so finally, someone asked him. The driver responded, "This is only a two-ton truck and I am carrying four tons of canaries, so I have got to keep two tons of them in the air all the time."

That story is certainly a picture of many of our lives! It may seem as if while we are going down life's road, we have to keep stopping to make sure everything is in order. But Christ wants us to trust Him and commit our lives to Him. When we are committed to Christ, we don't need to worry about what comes up in our lives; we can trust Him to take care of us.

God invites us to come to Him and live a life of commitment to Him. In our verses today we see that when we come to the Saviour, He offers us a life of rest. When we commit our lives to Him, God will take care of us and will give us rest. We do not have to worry about what will happen to us, but we can entrust our lives to God's care. Aren't you glad that we don't have to worry about what will happen to us because the Lord has it all figured out? What a great God we serve!

Not only does Christ offer us a life of rest, but He also offers us relief from our burdens. We all have burdens in life, but God wants us to give our burdens to Him. Psalm 55:22 says, "Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved." As we give our burdens to the Lord, He will sustain us and give us rest.

Amy Carmichael was a missionary to South India. She spent fifty-six years on the mission field and never returned home to England on furlough. An accident damaged her leg and left her bedridden for the last twenty years of her life.

It was during those years in bed that she wrote most of her forty books. God used her experience of suffering to bring encouragement to millions of people. As Amy remained committed to Christ, He gave her rest and used her to touch many lives.

Sometimes we may live for the Lord, but not be totally committed to Him. A life of commitment to Christ includes living for God no matter the burdens or trials we go through. As we remain committed to Him during these times, He will sustain us and will give us rest. We must remain committed to Him no matter what comes into our lives.

Are you living a life of commitment to our Lord? Even when trials or difficulties come into your life, remain committed to Christ. Do not run from God, but turn to Him and He will help sustain you and give you rest during your trial. Give your burdens to Him today and enjoy the rest He offers through a life committed to Him.
