Our Need for God

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not."

Romans 7:18

I once heard the story of a father who was trying to get a nap on a Sunday afternoon, but his young son kept bothering him. Finally, the dad took a piece of newspaper with a picture of the world on it and ripped it into little pieces. He said, "Son, this is a puzzle. Go put it together then come and let me know when you are done."

The little guy came back about fifteen minutes later and said, "I'm done!" The dad said, "You're kidding! How did you do that?" The boy then said, "Dad, there was a picture of a person on the back of that newspaper, and when I got my person put together, my world looked just fine."

Sometimes it can feel as if our world is being ripped into little pieces. Whether it is through trials, losses, or difficulties, things may come into our lives that seem to tear us apart. During these times, we must focus on the Person of God to "put the pieces back together." We must each turn to God to help us in our times of difficulty.

Many times when troubles enter our lives, we can fail to see our need for God because of pride. Pride is the base of our sin nature. Many of the sins we commit can be traced back to pride. We desire to do things our way, and we think we know what's best. God desires to help us, however, as we live for Him.

Proverbs 11:2 says, "When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom." Pride can often get us into a lot of trouble, but when we look to God and recognize our need for Him, He will help us through our trials.

We also see in Proverbs 16:18, "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." Many times our pride can cause us to try to solve things our own way. When we fail to seek God's help and His way, we usually end up with more problems than we had in the first place! We cannot see what God desires to do through our problems, so we must trust Him and obey His will. We must submit to Him and let Him work everything out to His glory.

Have you ever realized that God knows what we are going through and that He is waiting to help us? He wants to grow us and pour out His blessings on us, but when we have pride, God cannot help us. We must lay aside our pride and seek His help. We cannot do things our way and expect God to help us. We must seek Him for help.

Are you struggling through a difficult time right now? Have you asked God for help? We must all set aside our tendency to work things out on our own and recognize our need for God. Seek God's help today and let Him take control of your situation. Let Him help you and bless you today.
