God's Provision

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

Matthew 7:7-11

Among those in the court of Alexander the Great was a philosopher of outstanding ability but little money. He asked Alexander for financial help and was told to draw whatever he needed from the imperial treasury. But when the man requested an amount equal to $50,000, he was refused—the treasurer needing to verify that such a large sum was authorized. When he asked Alexander, the ruler replied, "Pay the money at once. The philosopher has done me a singular honor. By the largeness of his request he shows that he has understood both my wealth and generosity."

Our God owns more than even Alexander the Great did, yet sometimes we fail to take full advantage of His offer to provide for us. We saw yesterday that we can have peace from God when we give Him our worries and spend time with Him in prayer. So often we allow our problems and needs to rule our lives. But God desires that we would trust Him to provide for our needs.

It has been said that no one's voice sounds sweeter to God than your voice. God made us to fellowship with Him. He is our Heavenly Father, and He desires to meet our needs. It thrills my heart to be able to provide for my children when they have a need. Even more so, it thrills God's heart when we seek His help and lay our requests before Him.

God desires to take care of our physical provisions. We all have needs that come into our lives and each time of need presents an opportunity for us to either trust God or worry. God stands willing to receive our requests and meet our needs according to His will, yet many times we choose to worry about our problems and seek our own solution before consulting God. We must trust God with our needs and take our problems to Him first.

God also desires to meet our spiritual needs. Just as physical needs come into our lives, we all have spiritual needs as well. We cannot go through a day without needing God's power and protection.

There are also special times when we need God's grace or comfort to help us during trials. Hebrews 4:16 says, "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." We will go through trials and difficult times, yet sometimes we fail to recognize our spiritual needs and take them before God. God not only desires to meet our physical needs, but He desires to meet our spiritual needs as well.

Is there a need in your life today? Whether it is a physical need such as health, finances, or a provision of some kind or a spiritual need such as protection, power, or grace, God stands ready to meet your needs according to His will. Seek Him today. Spend time with Him and lay your needs before Him. Do not worry about how your needs will be met, but trust Him to provide for you today.
