Do You Trust Him?

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

Malachi 3:8-10

Basketball player and Christian A.C. Green once commented on tithing: "When you get paid, you first give God His tithe. When I was making six dollars an hour, I learned to tithe, which was difficult because there was so little money. Now I had to learn to tithe off a thousand times that amount, which could have been difficult because it was so much money.  I gave God his ten percent and even more off the top, I learned to give it willingly. The government takes almost half of my pay right off the top. Basketball agents can get up to four percent. An endorsement agent will get between ten and twenty percent. So why should I take my check, subtract taxes and expenses and give God a tithe off what's left? Everyone else gets his cut out of me based on the gross, so why shouldn't God?"

Yesterday, we briefly talked about stewarding our money for God. We saw that God has a purpose in our giving and He desires to use our time, talents, and treasures for His glory. Money and finances is often a touchy subject for most people. Many people do not want to hear of giving or tithing because they value the money they have. But as we saw yesterday, if we gain a right perspective of our finances—that God has given to us in the first place—we will be more willing to give to Him.

One reason some Christians fail to give to God is because they do not trust God to supply their needs. We as humans have been trained to figure things out and work out the consequences before making a decision. We have often applied this concept to our giving as well. We seek to know how we will make the next house payment if we give to God. We want to know how we will pay for groceries if we commit a sum of money to missions. We want to know how God will provide for us if we obey His command to give. We do not trust Him.

As we see in our verses today, the children of Israel came to a place where God was teaching them about giving to Him. He was explaining that ten percent of their income already belonged to Him and that they were to give above and beyond that. Even though the Israelites may not have understood how God was going to provide for them, God told them to prove Him.

Today, God is telling us to prove Him. He commands us to give to Him and He has also promised us that He will provide for our needs, so He tells us to prove Him. He wants us to give to Him and trust Him fully for our provisions. He wants to meet our needs miraculously. He wants us to say, "God, I cannot see how I will be able to provide for my family, but I trust You and I claim the promise of Your Word when You told me You would provide for me. I am proving You God."

Do you trust Him? Do you trust that God will provide for you as you obey His command to give? Don't be afraid of how things will work out. When God promises something to us, we can trust that He will come through with it! Prove God today. Ask Him how much He would have you give to Him. When He impresses an amount on your heart, do it! Don't let the devil bring fear and worry into your heart. Claim the promise God has given you and prove Him. Trust Him fully and let God show His power by providing for you miraculously.
