God's Miraculous Power

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."

Luke 1:34-38

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, she was quite surprised. Mary was an ordinary Jewish woman, yet now she had been told that she would bear and give birth to baby Jesus. What a tremendous honor, yet she was puzzled by how she being a virgin would bear this Child.

The angel says in verse 35, "And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God."

Christ was going to be born of the Holy Spirit, not of man. Although we cannot fully comprehend this, God has the miraculous power to accomplish the unimaginable. Verse 37 says, "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Mary believed and said in verse 38, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Even though she didn't understand all that would happen, she trusted the Lord. She let the Lord have control over the situation and she was glad to be used of God!

God's promises are proven by His power. When God promises you something, you can know that He'll come through! The same God that created the world in seven days, parted the Red Sea, brought a mighty flood upon the earth, sent fire from Heaven to consume Elijah's sacrifice, calmed the storm, and rose from the grave, demonstrates His promises today with His power.

Sometimes our human minds cannot figure out how God will work something out in our lives, but all we need to know is that God promised it and has the power to fulfill it. It's not up to us to figure out a plan for God to fulfill His promises. We simply need to trust Him and let Him show us His power.

As a little boy named Joey came home from Sunday school one day, his mother asked him, "What did you learn today?" He said, "The teacher taught about how Moses snuck behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to get the Israelites from Egypt. When they got to the Red Sea, his engineers built a pontoon bridge and everyone crossed. Then he called for reinforcements with his walky-talky. They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved." His mom said, "Now Joey, is that what the teacher said?" "Well, no mom, but if I told it the way the teacher did, you'd never believe it."

Is there an area in your life in which you are failing to trust God and His ways? Just as God demonstrated His power in Mary's life, He has the power to fulfill His promises in our lives. Nothing is too hard for God! Give your worries and problems to Him and trust His miraculous power.
