Consider His Power

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father."

John 10:1718

At the funeral of Louis the XIV, the cathedral was crowded with people who had come to mourn the death of their beloved monarch. The room was dark, save for a single candle illuminating the casket. The candle symbolized the greatness of the deceased king. As the clergyman stood to address the assembly, he reached from under the pulpit and snuffed out the candle. From the darkness echoed just four words, "God only is great!"

Jesus Christ, the Almighty Creator, came to earth as a tiny baby in a manger. He lived a humble life, void of the conveniences that could have easily been His own. When a miraculous healing offered people a glimpse of Jesus' divine power, He didn't want publicity. Upon raising the daughter of a Jewish ruler to life, Luke 8:58 says, "And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done."

Ultimately, Jesus laid down His life, enduring the pain of crucifixion and broken fellowship with the Father, as He took the sins of the world upon Himself. Jesus did all of this willingly.

Omnipotence is the attribute of Christ that speaks of His infinite power. Matthew 28:18 says, "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." He has given the lost man power to become a son of God (John 1:12), He gives power to the Christian for victory in spiritual warfare (2 Corinthians 10:4), and He gives power to His people in a work of revival (Ephesians 3:20).

Revival cannot be fabricated by man; it can only come by the working of the Spirit in one's heart, and the power of Christ in the believer. Pray today that God's power would be evident in your life as you seek spiritual revival.
