The Witness of a Christian

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

Matthew 25:20-21

Over the past few days we have seen that Christ desires for us to glorify Him in our workplaces. We are not there to simply bide our time or endure our work, but we must seek to glorify God through all we do. We must have a good testimony for Christ at work so we may be a witness for Him to our coworkers.

First Corinthians 10:31 says, "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." God desires for us to glorify Him no matter what we are doing! We can glorify Him at work by working hard, being obedient and respectful to authority, and having a good testimony.

As we see in our verses today, the servant was faithful in the small task his lord had given him, so his lord set him over many things! God desires to use us in a great way, but we must be faithful to what he has already called us to do.

George Washington Carver, the scientist who developed hundreds of useful products from the peanut, said: "When I was young, I said to God, 'God, tell me the mystery of the universe.' But God answered, 'That knowledge is reserved for Me alone.' So I said, 'God, tell me the mystery of the peanut.' Then God said, 'Well, George, that's more nearly your size.'" Just as God used George Washington Carver in a great way, He desires to use our lives in a great way. God will use us as we are faithful witnesses of Him.

We must not only be a witness for Christ through our testimony and actions, but we must also be a witness of the Gospel of Christ. It has been said that in the midst of a generation screaming for answers, Christians are stuttering. We have the truth, yet sometimes we can neglect to share it with others. A 1980 Gallup poll indicated that out of all evangelical American believers, "only two percent had introduced another person to Christ." We must be diligent in our witness for Christ! We must share the good news of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection with those around us.

While God desires for us to witness for Him at work, He does not want us to disobey our employers. Many employers wish for their employees to work hard and not socialize during work hours. But you can still witness to your coworkers during appropriate times. Maybe by taking a coworker out to lunch or by getting together away from the office, you can talk to them about God's love for them.

Are you being a good witness for Christ in your workplace? Are you telling others of His love for them? Ask Christ to give you wisdom and boldness to share the Gospel with your coworkers. Invite a coworker to lunch or plan a time to witness to them this week.
