Seek the Lord

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness."

Isaiah 55:1-2

Just before the turn of the century, thousands of workers around the world were preparing for "Y2K." Banks, businesses, governments, and military branches had all spent enormous amounts of time and money preparing for this time. While many people were going to great lengths to ensure their financial survival for the new year, others spent a tremendous amount of time and money preparing for "Y2K" celebrations and parties.

The year 2000 has come and gone, and every prediction of financial failure and technological failure has been proven wrong. Just as with the "Y2K" crisis, the world often seeks earthly solutions for survival. But as Christians, we must seek Christ to help us spiritually "survive."

As we seek Christ, He will give us spiritual strength for each day. In our verses today, we see God calling out to Jews and Gentiles alike to seek Him for spiritual strength and sustenance. Just as God promised His people, He will give us strength and nourishment to help us as we seek Him.

Not only will Christ give us strength, but He will also give us joy. In verse two we see that Isaiah called out to men who had spent money on "that which is not bread." These men had tried to secure happiness through financial means, but they failed. Every man has been created with a hole in his heart that only Christ can fill. Yet when men seek happiness through other sources, they are never satisfied. In 1900 there were three thousand millionaires in America. Today there are 3.5-million millionaires in America, yet men are still seeking happiness. Only through seeking Christ can we have true joy.

Christ says that those who truly seek Him will never be disappointed! Matthew 5:6 says, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." When we seek the Lord through prayer and Bible reading, we can have true joy and happiness in our lives. This world cannot offer us anything compared to the joy we can receive by seeking Christ!

While this world is busy seeking happiness and strength through earthly things, we must look to Christ and seek Him for our help and joy. Are you seeking Christ today? He will give us joy beyond what we could imagine! Seek Him today and let Him strengthen you and fill your life with His joy.
