According to Your Faith

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched He their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, see that no man know it.”

Matthew 9:27-30

Jesus’ miracles always have wonderful spiritual lessons hidden within them, and it is a treasure to be able to discover one of them! Here in this passage, two blind men cry out to Jesus asking Him to heal their blinded eyes. As He approaches them, He asks them one important question, “Believe ye that I am able to do this?” They did, and because of their faith, God was able to perform an amazing miracle.

Faith is important. You could say when faith prays for rain, it always brings an umbrella. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is the fantastic part that the human plays in salvation, and afterwards faith is what God uses to test us and to reveal how much we really trust Him. It’s one thing to say “The water’s fine,” but quite another thing to jump in.

The blind men in this passage knew about Jesus. He was the talk of their whole country at the time! Unless they chose to believe that Jesus could heal them, they would not have passed His first question. Jesus wanted to make sure, even afterwards, that their faith was real; that is why He said “According to your faith be it unto you.” If they had not had faith, then their eyesight would have been the exact same after their meeting with Jesus as it was before. Since they had faith, their eyes were opened, and they were able to see the world from which they had been kept from seeing for so long.

Christian living requires faith. Soul winning requires faith. It takes faith to give every week to the Lord in tithes and offerings! Faith is the very evidence of those things we want so badly, yet cannot see how they will work out. “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.” God wants us to have faith that He can do what He promised He would!

What about you? What in your life right now is requiring you to have faith? If your whole Christian life was based on Jesus’ last statement to these blind men, “According to your faith be it unto you,” would you be uncomfortable, or blessed? As you go about your business today, remember this passage on faith, and live the wonderful faith-filled life that God desires for every Christian.
