To Whom Can We Turn?
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.”
Isaiah 53:3-4
Has there ever been a time in your life when you needed someone to whom you could turn? Was there a time when you needed a shoulder on which you could cry? Have you ever felt alone when you needed some help in your life?
Christian, Jesus knows what you are going through! As we see in our verse today, He went through the most pain a person could experience during those times, and no one helped Him. Not even His own people helped Him! Christ came to this earth to save us and give us an eternal home, yet no one comforted Him.
It should comfort us to know that Christ knows what we are going through! He has literally, “been there, done that.” Jesus can sympathize with any pains that you are going through, as we see in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Christ not only knows what you are going through, He also sympathizes with you. When Christ was on earth, He showed sympathy when His good friend Lazarus died. John
Because Christ wept, we know that we can weep. He showed that it is a normal part of the grieving process to weep and feel sad. Also, because He wept, He understands our sorrow. He felt grief as a man, just as every other person does. We can always go to Him for comfort and healing.
Friend, let Jesus be your companion in grieving. Hebrews 13:5 says, “…for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” He loves you and wants to help you. You don’t have to endure your troubles and trials alone. Take time right now to talk to God. Tell Him what grief you are going through. Let Him help you bear this burden. When you need someone to turn to in time of need, remember that Christ is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
