Do I Show Meekness?
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
Galatians 5:22-23
Friend, as we read in Galatians, let’s look at what meekness really is. The word meekness in this verse really means humility. Do you ever find yourself becoming proud about something? Maybe you did a good job at work or you fixed something around the house and you were proud because of it. Now, being proud of your work is different than being proud of yourself because you did that work.
The Bible teaches that we should have humility or meekness. There are some questions that you can ask yourself to determine if you are showing meekness or not. First of all, you can ask yourself, “Do I become angry or fretful easily?” Psalm 37:5-6 says, “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.” The meek person focuses his attention on Christ and does not worry about his circumstances.
Next, you can ask yourself “Do I receive God’s Word easily?” James 1:21-22 says, “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” When your pastor preaches, do you become easily offended? Do you resist God’s working in your life? Or, do you come to each service with an open heart, expecting God to work in your life?
Lastly, ask yourself, “Do I seek unity?” Ephesians 4:1-3 says, “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Do you find yourself always fighting with fellow Christians? Do you amplify people’s faults and failures? A person of meekness seeks to bring unity to those around him. We need to always be concerned with the edifying of others.
A young seminary student was excited about preaching his first sermon in his home church. After three years in seminary, he felt adequately prepared, and when he was introduced to the congregation, he walked boldly to the pulpit, his head high, radiating self-confidence.
He stumbled reading the Scriptures and then lost his train of thought halfway through the message. He began to panic, so he did the safest thing: he quickly ended the message, prayed, and walked dejectedly from the pulpit, his head down, his self-assurance gone.
Later, one of the godly elders whispered to the embarrassed young man, “If you had gone up to the pulpit the way you came down, you might have come down the way you went up.”
Friend, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Do you find yourself wondering if you have meekness in your life? Take these few questions and examine yourself with them. Ask the Lord to show you any imperfections in your heart. Seek to become someone who is known as a humble person, a person of meekness.
