The Blood of Christ

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”

Ephesians 2:13

In keeping with the theme of revival, notice the life of William Cowper. In 1768, William Cowper moved to Olney in Buckinghamshire to be under the ministry of the Reverend John Newton, who served there as the evangelical curate. Despite his battles with depression, Cowper was a tremendous author and hymn writer. After overcoming a tremendous trial in his life, Cowper wrote one of his most famous hymns, “There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood.” The words to the first verse are as follows:

There is a fountain filled with blood
            Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
            Lose all their guilty stains:
            Lose all their guilty stains,
            Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
            Lose all their guilty stains.

No matter our trial or situation, we gain great strength through the blood of Jesus Christ. It is the blood of Christ that frees us from sin; it is the blood of Christ that gives us victory day by day; and it is the blood of Christ that draws us closer to our Saviour.

Thank God today that you have been saved by the blood of Christ, but there is more to the Christian life than just being saved. God wants us to serve Him and seek to be like Him each day! Ask Christ to help you become more like Him.

Compassion

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.”

Lamentations 3:51

During the month of January we're focusing our daily devotions on revival. It is my prayer that these daily readings and stories of revival will encourage you to experience a personal revival by the end of the New Year.

David Livingstone, who was raised in poverty, was one of seven children. At the age of ten he began working in the local cotton mill, studying classic literature in his spare time. The young Scotsman had completed his medical education, involving two years of study in Glasgow, and was ready to give his life to the Lord. His eyes were fastened upon the speaker, Robert Moffatt, who had a vehement concern for Africa’s perishing millions. These words by Moffatt gripped Livingstone’s heart: “I have sometimes seen, in the morning sun, the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary has ever been.” This statement gave Livingstone a desire to reach these people.

How many people do we pass each day without Christ? We see the lost, but does it affect our hearts? Do we do something about it? May we not allow the untold millions to pass us each day without doing our part to tell them about the love of Christ. Ask God to help you become more soul-conscious and to love others as He loves them.

Cleanse Your Hands

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

2 Corinthians 6:17

One of Susannah Wesley’s daughters came to her one day wishing to do something which was not altogether bad but which was not right. When she told her daughter not to do it, her daughter was not convinced.

It was late and Susannah and her daughter were sitting beside a dead fire. Her mother said to her, “Pick up that bit of coal.” “I don’t want to,” said the girl. “Go on,” said her mother. “The fire is out, it won’t burn you.” “I know that,” said the girl. “I know it won’t burn me, but it will blacken my hands.” “Exactly,” said Susannah Wesley. “That thing which you wish to do won’t burn, but it will blacken. Leave it alone.”

The Bible tells us not to even touch the unclean thing. Even if we do not think it is so terribly wrong, we must understand that it will blacken our hands.

God wants us to live pure and holy lives. Is there something that is blackening your life? Give it to God and let Him cleanse you. If we wish for revival to come, we must each examine our own lives and make sure we are right with God.

Not My Will, But Thine

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Proverbs 3:5

We all have our own understanding that alters our perspective. The book of Proverbs clearly warns us not to lean on this understanding. Susannah Wesley was the mother of Charles and John Wesley. In her words, “Religion is nothing else than doing the will of God and not our own.” Our own understanding is what keeps us bound to our will instead of releasing to God’s.

Christ set this example for us in the garden of Gethsemane when He said in Luke 22:42, “…Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” When Christ said “nevertheless,” He was exchanging what He desired for what He knew God desired.

God desires each of us to become more like Him. Are you leaning on your own understanding or surrendering to God’s will? Surrender your will to God and let Him change you to become more like Him.

An Enduring Soldier

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

2 Timothy 2:3

William Booth traveled for a while as a minister in London, but felt God wanted him to do more for the ordinary people, so he resigned his position to preach to people on the streets. After preaching a series of meetings in a large tent, Booth decided to start his own movement called “The Christian Mission.”

Slowly the mission began to grow, but the work was hard. According to his wife, Booth would “stumble home night after night, haggard with fatigue, often his clothes were torn, and bloody bandages swathed his head where a stone had struck.” Evening meetings were held in an old warehouse where young boys threw stones and fireworks through the window. Outposts were eventually established and in time attracted converts, yet the results remained discouraging—this was just another of the 500 charitable and religious groups trying to help in the east end of London.

It was not until 1878, when the Christian Mission changed its name to the Salvation Army, that things began to happen. The momentum changed. The idea of an army fighting against sin caught the imagination of the people and the army began to grow rapidly. Booth’s fiery sermons and sharp imagery drove the message home and more and more people found themselves willing to leave their pasts behind and start a new life as a soldier in the Salvation Army.

Many times we long for revival but never stop to think of the price that must be paid. We must empty our lives of anything that would hinder God from working in us. Then we must wholly yield ourselves to Him and ask Him to change our lives through revival. Seek God today and ask Him to begin a revival in your heart.

The Value of One

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.”

Psalm 60:12

A Boston shoe clerk by the name of D.L. Moody once heard a preacher say, “The world has yet to see what God will do with a man who is fully and wholly consecrated to the Holy Spirit.” In response, Moody said, “By the grace of God, I’ll be that man.”

Through God, there is no limit to what one person can do. Born in Northfield, Massachusetts, D.L. Moody was raised on a farm until the age of 16 when he worked in a store in Boston. After a move to Chicago, Moody gained skill and rose to the top as a clerk and as the company’s best salesman. Amidst his success, Moody had a love for children that moved him to start a Sunday school in an abandoned freight car. The Sunday school grew and eventually met in a hall given to him rent-free by the mayor of Chicago. This Sunday school ended up reaching 1,500 boys and girls each week. After much prayer, Moody left his secular field, at age twenty three, and committed himself totally to the Lord’s work. The young D.L. Moody believed that through his God, he could do valiantly. His faith allowed his walk with God to be the dominant factor of his life.

Luke 1:37 says, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” Even though some may say revival is impossible in America today, God says that nothing is impossible. Take time right now to pray for revival.

A Book of Love

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”

Psalm 119:18

Revival will not come apart from the Word of God. This fact was recognized by Horatio Bonar, a Scotsman born in December of 1808. He served as the minister of many churches throughout Scotland. On the topic of Scripture, he said, “Have not our suspicious hearts darkened this book of light? Do we not often read it as the proclamation of a command to do, instead of a declaration of what the love of God has done?”

The Word of God is written to us as a love letter, full of “wondrous things” for us to behold. May we dig deeper into its pages and search to see all the love God has displayed toward us. May we read it each day and ask God to manifest to us His love. May it be more than a book of commands listing all that we should not do, but a book of love showing us what God has already done.

Take time right now to read God’s Word. Search the Scriptures and seek to know God more through reading His Word. Then, ask God to change you through what you read.
