Simply Trust Him

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles."

Psalm 34:4-6

Yesterday we talked about being committed to Christ. As we trust God and are committed to Him, He will give us rest and will remove our burdens. Yet, why does it sometimes seem so difficult to trust our Lord when we are in the midst of a trial or difficulty? There are several things that could enter into our lives during a time of trial that can make it difficult to trust God.

First, sometimes fear enters our lives during a trial. As humans, we like to know how things are going to work out before we do something. But God wants us to trust Him without knowing how He will work it out. While we may be tempted to fear, He simply wants us to trust Him.

Second, we may sometimes fail to trust God because of worry. Worry makes us ponder the outcome of troubles before they even come. It constantly drains the energy God gives us to face daily problems and to fulfill our many responsibilities. When we worry, we are failing to completely trust God.

First Peter 5:7 says, "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." God cares for us and wants us to trust Him. When we worry about the outcome of our trials, we fail to see God's purpose for the trial! But as we trust God and His purpose for the trial, He can use it to better us and grow us closer to Him. We must simply trust Him.

Last, we sometimes fail to trust God because of doubt. Second Corinthians 5:7 says, "(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)" Because we cannot see how God will help us, we may sometimes doubt His ability to help us in our situation. We can sometimes look to other places for help before seeking Christ.

I once heard the story of a man who was hiking in the mountains and got too close to the edge of a cliff and fell off. But as he fell, he grabbed onto a branch about five hundred feet down from the top. He cried out, "Somebody help!" He then heard the voice of God say, "Trust me, let go and I'll catch you." He looked back down and then he looked up and said, "Is there anyone else up there?" Many times we look to God as a last resort during our trials. We should not doubt God but seek Him first during our trials, for He alone can help us.

God wants to help us during our trials, yet we can sometimes be filled with fear, worry, or doubt. Our God is able to take care of any trial that enters our lives! There is no need to fear anything that happens in our lives because God is in control of it all! We must simply trust Him.

Has fear, worry, or doubt entered your life? God does not want us to go through life without His help! He wants to sustain us and help us during difficult times. Turn to Christ and let Him help you. Simply trust Him with your life today.
