God's Purpose in the Workplace by Dr. Paul Chappell "Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him." Ephesians 6:5-9 Perhaps you have been driving down the road and seen the bumper sticker which reads, "I owe, I owe, so off to work I go." For most Christians in the workplace, it is sad that this quote actually reflects their main reason for going to work. A recent poll indicated that more than thirty percent of those in the workplace are unhappy with their job. Every day in America, fifty thousand people quit their jobs. The average person has worked eight different jobs by age forty, and many people keep switching jobs in hope of a larger paycheck. But God has a purpose for you as a Christian at the workplace that is far more important than a paycheck. Throughout history, people—saved and unsaved—have faced all types of pressures in the workplace. Our verses today speak of our purpose in the workplace. Many people go day to day, never seeing the spiritual purpose in their job or career. But as Christians we can be sure God has us where we are for a purpose. Two youngsters were closely examining bathroom scales on display at the department store. "Have you ever seen one of these before?' "Yeah, my mom and dad have one." "What's it for?" "I don't know," the second boy answered, "I think you stand on it and it makes you mad." These two young kids had misinterpreted the purpose of a scale. Even so, many times we can misinterpret our purpose at work. God desires us to be witnesses for Him and represent Him at our workplace. People around us are watching us. They are watching to see how we will respond when we get upset or when something doesn't go right. If we are not focused on God's purpose for us at work, we may not respond correctly to such situations. We may lose the opportunity to tell our coworkers of Christ. Over the next few days we will be discussing God's purpose for us at our workplaces. Are you representing Christ well at work? He desires for us to be a light to those with whom we work. Take time right now to ask God to help you be a witness for Him at work. Ask Him to help you live for Him each day as you go to work. Daily Bible Reading 2 Kings 1-3 • Luke 24:1-35
