A Christian's Testimony at Work by Dr. Paul Chappell "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread." 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 Yesterday I mentioned that God desires for us, as Christians, to honor and glorify Him in our workplaces. God has a purpose for us at work, and that purpose is to show Christ to those around us. We must have a good testimony so our coworkers will see Christ in our lives. One way we can create a good testimony is through working hard. Some people spend more energy trying to get out of work than actually working! This should not be said of a Christian! God desires for us to work hard, as we see in our verses today. Someone once said, "God gives the birds their food, but He doesn't throw it into their nests." God will provide for us, but we must work hard at work. Being a Christian should make you a better and more productive employee. We must obey God's command to work hard, and He will provide the rest. Another way we can develop a good testimony, is by having an obedient spirit at work. Ephesians 6:5-6 says, "Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart." We should obey our employers because God has placed them as authorities in our lives. Also, we must have a respectful spirit at work. Sometimes authority may be wrong, but God still commands us to respect those over us. Romans 13:7 says, "Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour." Even when we do not agree with our authorities, we are to respect their position. Many employees do not respect their employer, but we can create a good testimony at work by respecting our employers. If we have a bad testimony at work, we will not be able to effectively witness for Christ to our coworkers. God has placed us in our workplaces with a purpose in mind. He desires for us to tell those around us of His gift of salvation, yet if we do not have good testimonies, we will not be effective witnesses for Him. Do you have a good testimony at work? Do you have an obedient and respectful attitude toward your authority? Ask God to help you have the right spirit at work. Ask Him each day as you go in to work to help you glorify Him through a good testimony. Daily Bible Reading 2 Kings 4-6 • Luke 24:36-53
