Freedom Through Christ

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

John 8:34-36

Those people who do not know Christ as their Saviour have no freedom today. They may be Americans. They may have the liberty to work, vote, and pursue the American dream; but, if they do not know Christ as their Saviour, they have no spiritual freedom. What a tragedy that so many people today are living in a free nation, yet they are without the real freedom of the heart—the forgiveness of sin, the knowledge that Christ is their Saviour, and that Heaven is their home.

In 1972, when I received Christ as my Saviour, He forgave my sin, He set my feet upon a rock, He established my goings, and from that day on I have known I am on my way to Heaven. I thank God today that His Son set me free through His shed blood on the Cross of Calvary.

There are a lot of people who are celebrating their freedom in many different ways today, most of which are displeasing to the Lord. In reality, they are slaves to the god of this world.  I do not need to experience a drug high or a hangover to celebrate my freedom. I am spiritually free for all eternity because Jesus Christ shed His blood for me.

An old Gospel songs says, “Once I drifted out in sin, had no joy or peace within, and my soul was burdened down with pride, then the Saviour came along, and He showed me I was wrong, and He placed me on the winning side.” Thank God that if you are saved, God has placed you on the winning side. Thank God you have been set free indeed!

Sadly, this world is full of liberated people who are held captive in their sins. They need to be set free by the gift of God’s Son. You see, freedom in Christ is the greatest gift anyone could ever receive.

My friend, you may speak out among co-workers about political freedom, but have you shared with them the liberating message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Have you told them that they can be spiritually free for all of eternity? Let’s purpose today to share with others the greatest gift of all—freedom through Christ.
