The Promise of His Coming

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

John 14:2-3

Some friends of ours decided to let our three-year-old son record the message for our home answering machine. The rehearsals went smoothly: "Mommy and Daddy can't come to the phone right now. If you'll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they'll get back to you as soon as possible."

Then the test came. I pressed the record button and our son said sweetly, "Mommy and Daddy can't come to the phone right now. If you'll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they'll get back to you as soon as Jesus comes."

Notice in these verses that Jesus promises to come back to take all saved believers home to Heaven with Him. Titus 2:13 says, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” The words looking for at the beginning of this verse means to be expecting. We are to be expecting Christ to return at any moment!

There is an inscription in the dome of our Capitol in Washington which few people know about.  It says:  "One far-off divine event toward which the whole creation moves."  A visitor saw this inscription and asked the guide what it meant.  He said:  "I think it refers to the second coming of Christ."  When the dome of our Capitol was erected, some God-fearing official ordered that inscription to be etched in the dome of our seat of government, believing that its truth was vital to the concern of our nation.

Not only are we sure that He is coming, but we are sure that His coming will be sudden. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 says, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

The great evangelist, D.L. Moody, used to say, “I never preach a sermon without thinking that possibly the Lord may come before I preach another.” Dr. G. Campbell Morgan, the distinguished British clergyman, said, “I never begin my work in the morning without thinking that perhaps He may interrupt my work and begin His own. I am not looking for death, I am looking for Him.”

What a great promise! Christ is coming again! Not only is He going to come but He is going to take us home with Him! No more sorrow, no more heartache, no more sickness, no more death, and no more suffering. When He comes back, we will be taken to Heaven and will be with Him forever more! What a great God we serve! Friend, encourage fellow believers with these promises! When they are going through a tough time, remind them of Christ’s soon coming.

Are you living as if Christ would come back any time? Do you waste your time on petty things while precious time wastes away? Get busy serving the Lord! Only what’s done for Him will last for all eternity! Don’t be afraid to tell those around you of the Lord before it is too late. You will never regret telling someone about God’s gift of salvation, but you will be accountable to God for all the times you didn’t tell someone of His love for them. Think right now of those around you who need to hear of Christ. Ask the Lord to help you be a witness to them.
