A Cry for Peace

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:5-7

Our world is bent on attaining peace. Some governments have tried to attain peace by encouraging nations to form alliances and sign treaties. Some people have negotiated terms and made sacrifices in an attempt to secure world peace. But while our world cries for peace, we know that true peace can only come through Christ.

Man's mistake is that we believe we can attain peace by ordering all of our physical circumstances and by attaining earthly goals and achievements. But peace does not result from properly arranged external conditions; peace is the result of a right relationship with God in your inner man!

When the Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians, he was imprisoned in Rome. Even though he was suffering physically, he wrote, "Let you moderation be known unto all men." The word moderation means "forbearance, good will, friendly disposition." It is the idea of rejecting vengefulness and being at peace. Even though Paul had been wrongfully imprisoned, he could have peace knowing that God was in control.

Just as the Apostle Paul, we can have peace in any situation. One way to have peace is through giving our problems to God. We see in our verses today that we are to be "careful for nothing." We are not to worry about what is going on, but we are to take our problems to the Lord and trust Him to take care of us.

George Muller said, "To care is a virtue, but to foster cares is a sin, for each anxiety is to not trust in God—but to trust in one's self and to promote inner suffering, fear, and worry." It is in our human nature to worry about things, but as Christians, we should give our problems to God. He desires to give us peace during hard times. We must trust Him.

We can also have peace by spending time with God through prayer. Someone once said, "Sometimes it takes a great lack of peace to draw us to our knees!" It is often in times of unrest or difficulty that we are drawn back to God through prayer. When we take our problems to God through prayer, He will give us peace.

While this world looks to programs and treaties to secure peace, true peace only comes through our Heavenly Father. We must take our problems to Him and spend time with Him in prayer. As we seek Him first during these difficult times, He will give us peace.

Is Christ your source of peace? Only He can give us the peace that passes all understanding during difficult situations. Spend time with Christ right now through prayer and give Him your problems. Let Him fill your heart with peace today.
