Consider His Grace

Revival Readings for the New Year

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ."

John 1:17

It is amazing how a child's curiosity is stirred by the word "no." Because of their sin nature, children will do wrong on their own, but a parent's command stirs up the obstinate will of a child. Even so, because of our sinfulness, we all desire to do what is forbidden.

Paul said in Romans 7:78, "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead." The law is not wrong. It reflects the righteousness of God. The problem lies with man's inability to keep God's perfect law. For this reason we needed Christ to come and bring us grace.

Anything good in us is a result of God's grace. Paul humbly acknowledged this in 1 Corinthians 15:10, "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me." It is God's grace that transforms us into joyful, serving, and giving children of God. Oswald Chambers said, "Purity in God's children is not the outcome of obedience to His law, but the result of the supernatural work of His grace."

Consider God's grace for revival. Consider His saving grace that forgave all our sins. Consider His transforming grace that conforms us into His image. Consider His glorifying grace when we will spend all of eternity at His feet. Spend time considering Christ's grace today, and thank Him for the gift of grace He has offered you personally!
