Our Unchanging God

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”

Malachi 3:1-6

There is no question that we live in a day of unprecedented change. It seems as if you can’t even go to work without finding out that something has changed—someone has moved, someone was fired, someone was hired, or someone stole your favorite pen from your desk. The world is changing economically. Even America’s industries are now globalizing. A few years ago, Daimler and Chrysler merged. Really the only thing that changed, if you read the fine print, is that for the first time, Chrysler’s headquarters are in Germany.

In the midst of constant change and mobilization in our day, I’m thankful that I serve a God who never changes! He is devoid of all change in His being. He is unchanging in His relationships to time and space. He is the only constant of the universe!

Friends, jobs, and houses may all come and go, but our God will never change! Hebrews 13:5 shows us this promise when it says, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

God doesn’t leave us on this earth without a promise that He will be with us. He has always been and always will be with us.

There is a place on my Grandfather Chappell’s farm that is very special to me. To get there, you must drive past the farm house and down the Colorado dirt road for a mile or two. On the left are pinion trees and sage brush, and on the right are fields of red dirt where the pinto beans grow. To the north are the La Salle Mountains in Utah, and to the east are the San Juan’s. Cutting through the trees, you can walk to a canyon ledge where, for me, time seems to stand still.

Perhaps the aspect I love the most about that place is that it never changes. It is one of those few places that I can visit that everything seems to be okay. God just lets that place remain as it has been these past years.

Friend, even though we live in a society of never-ending change, we can rest in the fact that God never changes. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” You can trust Him just as much now as you did on the day of your salvation because He promises that He hasn’t changed since then!  Has your Christian life been getting stronger or weaker in recent months?  Have you been drawing closer to the Lord or slipping away from Him?  Jesus is the only constant in your life—He never changes!  So what changes do you need to make to draw closer to Him and grow in His grace today?
