Glorifying God

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began."

2 Timothy 1:8-9

Billy Sunday once said, "More men fail through lack of purpose than lack of talent." There are many people who go about life with no purpose. Others seem to only be living to gather earthly possessions or material wealth. But as Christians, we know that God has a purpose for each of our lives, and we are to fulfill that purpose for our lives.

One of God's purposes for our lives is that we would glorify His name through all that we do. Ephesians 1:12 says, "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ." When we bring praise to His name, we are fulfilling the eternal purpose God has determined for us as believers.

The world around us notices that we are Christians and they watch how we live. If we live no differently than they do, they will not see their need for Christ. But as we glorify Christ through all we do, they will see Christ through our lives. God desires that we glorify Him in all we do so others may see Him through our lives.

A late actor who was one of Hollywood's leading men a generation ago seemed to have it all. After a glamorous life, however, he felt there was nothing else for which to live. Having no peace, he took his life, leaving this note: "I committed suicide because I am bored and because I have already lived long enough."

Millions of people today are hurting and struggling to find the significance of life and they feel as though life has no purpose. Some turn to money, pleasure, or substances to find purpose, but true purpose in life can only come through Christ. We know that with God, our purpose is to glorify Him in all we do.

Sometimes we can get so busy in life that we forget our purpose! God desires for each of us to glorify Him in all we do each day. Whether we are at work, home, or simply out and about, others should know that we are Christians through our actions. We must remember as we go about our day that our purpose is to bring glory and honor to God's name.

Are you glorifying God through your actions? Our purpose on earth is not to gain possessions or material wealth, it is to do God's will and glorify His name in all we do. Ask God to help you glorify Him today and remember to honor Him in all you do today.
