God's Promise

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

Romans 8:28

Someone once said, "You can't break God's promises by leaning on them." God has promised us many things and one thing He promises us, is to be near us during our trials. He does not promise to always remove trials from our lives, but He does promise to work in our lives during these times.

We see in our verse today that God promises that everything He allows in our lives is for our good. God knows when we have trials, and He desires to work through these trials. But He cannot work if we are resisting Him. It is not always easy to go through a trial, yet we must look to God and seek His purpose in the trial. As we turn to God and seek His purpose, He promises to work through our trials to grow us.

A trial is not always punishment from God! Sometimes God requires brokenness before He gives blessings. He often uses trials to draw us closer to Him or to strengthen our faith in Him. I once heard a preacher say, "Don't waste your trials." God has a purpose in every trial, and we must seek His purpose instead of becoming bitter or angry. God promises to work in us if we will seek Him.

During our trials, we must remain faithful to God. It might not be easy to see God's presence during times of trial, yet God is there, and we must remain faithful to Him. Many Christians tend to become bitter and turn from God during trials, but that only hinders God's ability to work in us. We must continue to attend church, read our Bibles, spend time with God in prayer, and tell others of Christ. As we stay faithful to God during our trials, He promises to work in us and grow us spiritually.

After William Carey was well established in his pioneer missionary work in India, his supporters in England sent a printer to assist him. Soon the two men were turning out portions of the Bible for distribution. Carey had spent many years learning the language so that he could produce the Scriptures in the local dialect. He had also prepared dictionaries and grammars for the use of his successors.

One day while Carey was away, a fire broke out and completely destroyed the building, the presses, many Bibles, and the precious manuscripts, dictionaries, and grammars. When he returned and was told of the tragic loss, he showed no sign of despair or impatience. Instead, he knelt and thanked God that he still had the strength to do the work over again. He started immediately, not wasting a moment in self-pity. Before his death, he had duplicated and even improved on his earlier achievements. Because William Carey knew God was working for good in his trial, he trusted God, and God was able to work through the trial and bless him because of it.

Are you going through a trial today? God desires to work through our trials but we must first trust His promise and let Him work in our lives. Give your trial to God today and remain faithful to Him. Let Him work through your trial to draw you closer to Him.
